The Timeless 100
Where America’s most enduring universities are. Half of each score is academic standing, today and in history; half is staying power: endowment, financial health and age.
The list spans 34 states and the District of Columbia. California has 12 schools, New York 8, Massachusetts 7, and Pennsylvania and Texas 6 each.

Why “timeless”
Annual rankings move every year. A university’s name, history and financial strength move slowly, and they are what a graduate carries for life, at home and abroad.
The Timeless 100 ranks American universities on both. Half of each score is academic standing: ten of today’s ranking systems, read across every edition we could find, plus surveys of American graduate education from 1925, 1957 and 1966. The other half is staying power: total endowment, financial health and age.
2026 edition. Data as of September 2026. 140 universities scored; the top 100 are shown above in groups of 25.
How the score works
- 40 · Ten ranking systems, 4 points each
- 10 · Historical surveys, 1925–1966
- 20 · Total endowment
- 20 · Financial health
- 10 · Longevity
Academic standing: 50 points
Ten ranking systems count equally, 4 points each: the ten covered in our article The Top Ten University Ranking Systems and How To Use Them. We use every edition we could read, not only this year’s, so a school earns credit for standing high over time. Global rankings are re-ranked among US universities only. Where a publisher issues two lists (U.S. News, TIME), they share one slot so no publisher counts twice.
Another 10 points come from three historical surveys of American graduate education: Hughes (1925), Keniston (1957) and Cartter (1966).
Staying power: 50 points
Endowment (20) is total endowment on a log scale, not endowment per student, so large public universities are not penalized for enrollment. Financial health (20) uses Moody’s long-term credit ratings and, for private universities, the U.S. Department of Education’s financial responsibility score. Very strong ratings (Aaa, Aa1) add a small bonus; ratings of Baa1 and below take a small deduction. Longevity (10) gives full credit to any university 150 years or older.
Fair-play rules
- No school is penalized for a list that left it out by design, such as early surveys that excluded technical institutes.
- A survey taken before a school was founded is skipped for that school, not scored as zero.
- A university’s founding year is the earliest institution it traces itself to.
- When two schools tie, the older school ranks first.

Questions
Why isn’t my school on the list?
We scored 140 national universities (see “Who was considered”). Liberal arts colleges and standalone medical or graduate schools were outside the pool, which says nothing about their quality.
Why does money count for half the score?
Endowment and credit quality are what let a university keep its faculty, programs and standing through downturns and policy changes. A school that lasts is a school whose name keeps its value.
Why use surveys from the 1920s to the 1960s?
They show which universities were already leaders generations ago. Standing that has held for a century is the clearest sign it will hold for the next few decades.
Why total endowment instead of endowment per student?
Per-student figures penalize large public universities for serving more students. Total endowment measures the capital a university can draw on.
How often is the list updated?
Once a year, with a new edition date.
Can I share or cite the list?
Yes. It is free. Please link back to this page using the citation below.
